Q: What does an optometrist do?
A: Optometrist – Diagnoses common eye diseases and disorders as well as refractive vision correction. In some countries they can treat with a limited number of pharmaceuticals. In a small number of countries they do minor surgery within the limits of what General Practitioners do, although sometimes the scope of this is disapproved by ophthalmologists. In most countries, optometry is either a 4 year or 5 year college degree and they are not classified as Doctors (except in the Phillipines).
In the USA, the standard education is four years of college and four years of optometry school at an accredited Doctor of Optometry (OD) program – with an additional one to two years of residency, internship, and/or fellowship and specialty training is required for specialty training. Sometimes these optometrists use the term optometric physician or medical optometrist.
Q: I have an astigmatism, what does that mean?
A: Astigmatism is an optical defect in which vision is blurred due to the inability of the optics of the eye to focus a point object into a sharp focused image on the retina. This may be due to an irregular or toric curvature of the cornea or lens.
Q: I have dry eyes, what does this mean?
A: dry eye syndrome (DES), or simply dry eyes, is an eye disease caused by decreased tear production or increased tear film evaporation commonly found in humans. Dry eyes can cause irritation and redness in your eyes, your optometrist can provide several solutions to help aid with this problem. Common solutions include plugs and/or eye drop solutions.
Q: How often should I have my eyes examined?
A: It is recommended to have your eyes checked routinely once a year to maintain healthy vision. Although you may not notice any subtle changes in your vision this does not mean that you should ignore checking your eyes frequently. If you have any eye irritation or vision problems consult your doctor immediately.
